Drowning Prevention:

Last year 31 drowning deaths occurred in King County.  Most drownings happend in open water - lakes, rivers, and Puget Sound.  A common factor in almost all drowinings was that victims were not wearing life jackets.  Many drownings were also alcohol related. Here are some tips to help you be safe in the water:

  • Swim in designated areas with lifeguards on duty.
  •  Always wear a life jacket or vest when swimming or boating in open water.
  • Infants and Children should wear life vests or jackets when near open water.
  • Washington law requires children 12 and under to wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket or vest on all boats less than 19 feet.
  • Appoint sober adults to supervise children at beach or pool gatherings
  • Don't drink alcohol around open water
  • Make sure all family members know how to swim.
  • Learn CPR.
